A breathalizer for your iPod! No, really!

So, it's come to this.

From the ad copy:

"Here's This Season's "Must-Have" iPod Accessory That All The Celebrities in Hollywood Are Clamoring For.

Introducing the iBreath Alcohol Breathalyzer. It's the ultimate iPod accessory that lets you take your own alcohol breath test so you can get home safely.

Hollywood's A-listers have been among the first to purchase the newly available gadget to insure that their mug shot is not the next one to grace the tabloids and news reports.

Not only can this cool gizmo save you from career-ending embarrassment, it can potentially save you thousands of dollars in legal fees and jail time. And if keeping you safe and out of the jail isn't enough, this clever & innovative breathalyzer doubles as an iPod FM transmitter that transmits your iPod tunes to any FM tuner.

Just fold out the blow wand and exhale into it for at least 5 seconds. 2 seconds later, this amazing tool let's you know if you're within the legal limit to drive. It even houses a timer that can be set from 1 minute up to 8 hours in order to remind you when it's time for the next test."

I'm from the "If you're wondering if you can pass a breathalizer test, don't drive" school myself -- but if potential drunk drivers will listen to their iPods and realize it's a bad idea to get behind the wheel, I guess it's progress.

i love how of all the listed reasons for why this is a good idea, nowhere in there is "so your selfish drunk ass doesnt KILL someone because you couldnt be bothered to find another way home"

Yeah...

But even from a selfish point of view the prospect of blowing into this thing to see if I can get away with driving home after drinking seems horrifying to me. Not because I'm a saint or more concerned for the safety of others than my own convenience (I eat while driving and talk on my cell phone - sometimes both at once) -- but out of concern for my personal safety.

WONDERING if you're too drunk to drive is a good indication that you are.

I feel like this is another way to make us lazy. Whatever happened to, drinking safely? Yes, this may save lives which is excellent, but it could also encourage that one person to say, "Hey I can drink as much as I want as long as I use my breathalizer before I drive." If you are already drunk, you are still going to just get in your car and drive, and you know people are not going to be out in clubs, bars, or lounges thinking before I take this next shot, let me check myself on the breathalizer. I just feel like it's enabling people to drink irresponsibly as long as they use their breathalizer...

I really dont know how I feel about this. Its good that people will have that readily available, but at the same time we have a hard enough time trying to get people not to drink and drive. This may have the opposie effect and make people more careless with their drinking habits. But who knows? This may be a step in the right direction.

Some of those are valid points, but I don't think the device is enabling anyone. People who don't care about the consequences are not going to care any less as a result of using this product. On the other hand, seeing a reading that is above or close to the legal limit may very well act as a detterent.
