Guilford County starts "Green Tip of the Week"

Residents can now access green living tips through the Guilford County government Web site. The rationale:

"Worldwide, the headlines feature soaring energy costs, the effect of greenhouse gases and the depletion and pollution of our natural resources. These global issues parallel local concerns about water resources, gasoline prices and air quality. Use these weekly "Green Tips" to learn how we in Guilford County can impact these issues, and what we can do to become more sustainable and make a positive difference in our community."

Below, the county's new logo. Residents can also review and comment on the county's new "Green Guilford" draft plan.

Great to have your new blog on environmental issues!

One of the goals in the Green Guilford Report is to "protect 100 acres of park and open space per 1,000 residents of Guilford County." That goal is about 50% realized.

Thanks to the Guilford County Commissioners at their meeting last night for approving two new properties to be added to land being permanently preserved by the Guilford County Open Space Program. Guilford County has now approved the purchase of six tracts for land preservation and money to purchase those properties comes from a $10 million open space bond approved by the voters in 2004.

We have a long way to go to realize our goal. At the Oct. (possibly Nov.) meeting of the county commissioners on the agenda should be a request for approval of the purchase of some of the beautiful Richardson tract off Lake Brandt Rd. If approved that tract will be used to help connect the Mountain to Sea Trail to our local watershed trails and also to the emerging Haw River State Park.
